DRIFTING 10.23.05
(Hebrews 2:1-4)

Two weeks ago in Hebrews 1 we considered that:
… if we don’t realize how much BETTER Jesus is than anything else, we’ll always be TEMPTED to believe something else can be BETTER.
… AND

… if we don’t ACCEPT that Jesus is better than anything else in our lives, we will always be UNCERTAIN about our FAITH.
… Angels are not CREATURES to be worshipped, they are creatures who worship [and serve] JESUS.
… "You can do WITHOUT angels; you can’t do WITHOUT Jesus.”

~~~~~~~
1 So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may DRIFT (carelessly pass; let slip –Strong’s) away from it. 2 The message God delivered through angels has always proved true, and the people were punished for every violation of the law and every act of disobedience. 3 What makes us think that we can escape if we are indifferent to this GREAT SALVATION that was announced by the Lord Jesus himself? It was passed on to us by those who heard him speak, 4 and God verified the message by signs and wonders and various miracles and by giving gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose to do so.
Hebrews 2:1-4 NLT
Mysteries in life:
- Why do we call those places people rent “apartments” when they’re all stuck together?
- Why do we wait until a pig is dead to cure it?
- If quitters never win, and winners never quit, what do I do when someone says to me “quit while you’re ahead?” SC – Dave Hartson
Another mystery in life is how people find it hard to understand that simply doing NOTHING is DANGEROUS in the SPIRITUAL realm.
Doing nothing is seen in:
- Relationships that fall apart because we don’t work at them.
- A beautiful garden destroyed by neglect.
- A house crumbles around you if you don’t maintain it.
- If you are in business you don’t need to take a machine gun to customers to kill it, simple neglect is enough.
- If you’re seriously ill you don’t need to commit suicide by taking poison or shooting yourself to die; you can often do it just as effectively by ignoring early symptoms or not taking medicines.
- As Solomon put it:
33Sleep a little. Doze a little. Fold your hands and twiddle your thumbs. 34Suddenly poverty hits you and everything is gone!
Proverbs 24:33-34 CEV
Various theologians use the same metaphor for the word DRIFTING in verse 1. It’s the metaphor of a bucket with a small leak in it.
- Spiritual drifting isn’t something that takes place in a moment in time; it’s a gradual loss of spiritual vitality slowly leaking from a neglected spiritual bucket.
This week my parents and I have been to Portland a couple times. Friday on the way back we took the Columbia Historic Highway.
- The colors were incredible!
- But for as beautiful as the color were, they remind us that a process is taking place. The weather is changing and the leaves are no longer receiving their life-giving juices. They are drying up, dying, and in time will fall and drift away.
The same thing is true of us spiritually. The life-giving juices of the Holy Spirit begin to leak out of our spiritual bucket if we lose our focus on Jesus.
In Saint Louis in 1984, an unemployed cleaning woman noticed a few bees buzzing around the attic of her home. Since there were only a few, she made no effort to deal with them. Over the summer the bees continued to fly in and out the attic vent while the woman remained unconcerned, unaware of the growing city of bees. The whole attic became a hive, and the ceiling of the second-floor bedroom finally caved in under the weight of hundreds of pounds of honey and thousands of angry bees. The woman escaped serious injury, but she was unable to repair the damage of her accumulated neglect. SC – Matthew Cook
“WARNING comes before DESTRUCTION.”
In Scripture we see how before God sends down a judgement against people, He’ll first send a warning.
- Remember Jonah and the city of Nineveh?
1 One day long ago, GOD's Word came to Jonah, Amittai's son: 2 "Up on your feet and on your way to the big city of Nineveh! Preach to them. They're in a bad way and I can't ignore it any longer."  Jonah 1:1-2 MSG
God sends us warning signs, when we start drifting from Him even today.
1 Loss of FOCUS
If our hearts change from the things of God to the things of this world, we’re drifting from God.
1 Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh's daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites. 2 The LORD had clearly instructed his people not to intermarry with those nations, because the women they married would lead them to worship their gods. Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway. 3 He had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. And sure enough, they led his heart away from the LORD. 4 In Solomon's old age, they turned his heart to worship their gods instead of trusting only in the LORD his God, as his father, David, had done. 1Kings 11:1-4 NLT
King Solomon had a problem. He loved women, probably among other things, more than he loved God.
- With 1,000 different women in his life; you bet he lost focus!
15 Stop loving this evil world and all that it offers you, for when you love the world, you show that you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only the lust for physical pleasure, the lust for everything we see, and pride in our possessions. These are not from the Father. They are from this evil world. 1John 2:15-16 NLT
- Love of the world SQUEEZES out love for the Father. (vs.15 MSG)
- When we love world more than God, it will ISOLATE us from God.
(vs.16 MSG)
2 Loss of PRIORITIES
You are more concerned about yourself than others, including God.
When asked about how to receive eternal life, Jesus replied:
"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.” And, “Love your neighbor as yourself." Luke 10:27 NLT
- We live in a self-serving, self-centered world, and Jesus’ followers, the Church, the Body of Jesus, must be different.
- The world is looking for something better; for realness and a real devotion to others.
3 Loss of PASSION
You know you're drifting from God when you no longer have a passionate love for God, His ways, His will and/or His word.
New Christians almost always exhibit deep passion for God.
- Do you remember what it was like when you first connected with God because you gave up trying to save yourself and accepted God’s gift of eternal life through Jesus?
- Or…
Are we CONTENT to give God a moment of our time
in the way we’d give a DOG a BONE?
4 Loss of DISCIPLINE
Your lifestyle becomes more questionable, or just plain sinful.
You can be sure that using people or religion or things just for what you can get out of them - the usual variations on idolatry - will get you nowhere, and certainly nowhere near the kingdom of Christ, the kingdom of God. Ephesians 5:5 MSG
Obviously, if we find ourselves sinning, there’s something wrong!
Don't be drunk with wine (or anything else that life has that dulls spiritual senses), because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.  Ephesians 5:18 NLT
- You can’t have the Spirit fill you if you choose to live apart from God’s Spirit.
5 Loss of COMMITMENT
- Your church attendance becomes less important to you.
When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, [Jesus] went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. Luke 4:16 NLT
-
Meeting regularly with other believers in various ways no longer matters.
And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of his coming back again is drawing near. Hebrews 10:25 NLT
“We never NEGLECT that
which we truly LOVE.”
God’s Final Answer, Helms, pg.42
“The INDIFFERENT are in as great a need of a SAVIOR as the drunkard, drug addict, murderer [or] genocidal tyrant.”
1 "Come, let us return to the LORD! He has torn us in pieces; now he will heal us. He has injured us; now he will bandage our wounds. 2 In just a short time, he will restore us so we can live in his presence. 3 Oh, that we might know the LORD! Let us press on to know him! Then he will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring."  Hosea 6:1-3 NLT
For every one who actually decides to turn his back on Christ, there are hundreds who drift through life without Him.
- It’s the drift that ruins men.
   … The drift of religiosity.
   … The drift of old habits and associations; which, in the case of these Hebrew Christians, was the going back to Judaism, the religious system they had come out of.
   … The drift of compromising with earthly desires that cater to our senses.
It’s so easy, so pleasant, to drift. To lie back, relax, and let yourself go wherever the waters of life might carry you. Any dead fish can go with the stream!
Are you drifting? We can tell by our answers to questions like these:
- Are the things of God and heaven becoming more clear in our spiritual vision?
- Do the raging waters of life beat fiercely at our life’s ship as we force our way through them?
   … If so, rejoice! But remember: only God’s strength is sufficient to keep our life’s boat heading against the stream; the pull of the world and attacks of the enemy.
   … If they’re not, you’re probably drifting.
~~~~~~~

We need to understand the contempt we show God when we neglect and ignore the great salvation (verse 4) He provided through Jesus.
- If we take this great salvation for granted, we’re in essence telling God that the death of Jesus is a little thing that does not deserve our utmost attention.
- May we never be deceived into thinking that on judgement day God’s just going to say:

“Oh well, it doesn’t really matter. I sent Jesus to die, but it really doesn’t matter that you ignored His sacrifice and were too busy to do anything about my warnings!”
